I’m so excited to announce that in addition to guest posts, I’ve brought on a few ladies to write for me every now and then. While I’ve known all these fabulous women for years, you haven’t – which is why over the next few weeks, I’ll be introducing you to all of them. A few weeks ago, you met Rhianne, a writer from England. You also met Sarah, my high-school friend turned ATX bar-hop buddy (seriously, that’s what we are). Today, I’m excited to let you “meet” Laney.
Laney has actually be writing posts for Ginger & Co. for a while now, and she’s written some fun ones, like The New Grad’s Guide to Going Full-Time, The Case for Taking Handwritten Notes, and the Introduction to Onenote.
Life always changes though, so I’m happy to re-introduce you to Laney.
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a talkative know-it-all Scorpio. I love mystery books and documentaries on Ancient Egypt and British Royalty (Tudor and Victorian eras are my favorites). I have a snowflake tattoo and I was a competitive figure skater for seven years. I love Sailor Moon and have named four of my pets over the years after characters from the series. (I know you’re all curious now; I had a Jack Russell/Dachshund mix named Serena, a white Maine Coon named Artemus, and I have two black cats named Diana and Luna). I have an obsession with Vera Bradley purses and the Happy Planner brand planners.
2. You recently graduated college and converted your part-time job into a full-time one. How are you feeling about this post-college life?
It’s still so weird to me that I am no longer in college. I really miss that structure and I miss the excitement of going to class and learning new things. I’m also trying to adjust to living life in the 9-5 world.
3. You’ve been side-hustling as an assistant for a few years now. How did you get started on that and what do you enjoy about it?
Flashback to senior year of high school: It was my last semester and my best friend’s aunt who is a real estate agent asked if I would come over and help with Facebook. From there it grew into me helping her with Quickbooks and then even more admin tasks for her business and her husband’s construction business. I have worked with five clients over the years and I work consistently with three of them. I enjoy helping my clients streamline their businesses and helping them with those tedious, time-consuming tasks that they dread so that they can get back to their real business pursuit.
4. In addition to your full-time job and your side-hustle, you also have a blog and have written some fiction. Tell us about that!
I love to write! I just have a hard time getting focused enough to churn out the words. I started my blog, Modern Laine, in August of 2015. Laura will tell you I’m a slacker, which I don’t argue against, but I just haven’t been as focused as I wanted. As for my fiction writing, I have a YA novel titled Southern Charm that I have been working on since 2010.
5. What goals do you have for the future?
I want to grow my blog, gain more skills with Facebook management and ads, and go to graduate school for social media management and marketing.
6. We’re all side-hustlers here, but taking time off from everything is important. What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day?
I love coming home and turning on whatever show I’m in the middle of binge watching. Right now that’s Will & Grace. I also love to decorate and write in my Happy Planner. Laura always jokes she created a monster when she introduced me to the Happy Planner brand.
Check Laney out at Modern Laine.
